About the work
Cyberspace Paradox is an experimental electronic music composition and live performance exploring the expressive possibilities of the human voice through technology. Combining composed melodies, live vocal improvisation and electronic sound design, the work transforms vocal material into evolving textures, rhythms and synthetic sound.
Built in Ableton Live, the performance system integrates prepared electronic music with live vocal input and real-time processing. Through a customised TouchAble Pro interface on an iPad, Chen controls selected sound parameters using Open Sound Control (OSC), shaping pitch, filtering, modulation, delay, reverb and other vocal transformations while singing. The voice moves between recognisable melodic expression and more abstract electronic sound, with its treatment changing during performance.
Rather than following a completely fixed sonic realisation, Cyberspace Paradox combines an established musical structure with live vocal decisions and responsive processing. The work explores the relationship between human expression and technological transformation, allowing the performer to reshape the sonic character of the composition in real time.
