About the work
TextMe is an interactive audiovisual performance combining electronic music, live vocals and audience participation. The work explores how communication between performer and audience can become part of the musical experience, allowing audience contributions to influence the unfolding composition in real time.
During the performance, audience members type words and messages using wireless keyboards. Their text appears on a large projection screen while a custom system built with Max/MSP, Open Sound Control (OSC) and Ableton Live translates selected keyboard inputs into musical controls. Typing can trigger sounds, modify rhythmic and spatial elements, and influence electronic and live vocal processing.
As the performer, Chen responds to audience messages through vocal improvisation while controlling the electronic system. The performance brings together pre-composed music, audience-generated input and live decisions, creating a different musical experience with each realisation.
